Our History

Interesting fact: McCune, Murphy & Potter Physical Therapy, PC is the oldest and longest-running outpatient physical therapy private practice in Tompkins County.

The company was founded in 1972 on West Hill by two Ithaca College Physical Therapy professors, Bob Sprague and Bob Grant. In 1983, Dr. David McCune, PT, DPT, MPHTY ST, OCS, FAAOMPT, joined forces with Bob Sprague and formed Sprague and McCune Physical Therapy.

Sprague and McCune opened a second location in Auburn in 1989, which they co-owned until Bob Sprague’s retirement in 1995. That year, Tim Ainslie joined the practice as partner, forming The Therapy Center, which was moved to the Ithaca office’s current location on Triphammer Road, the site of a former car dealership. The following year, the name of the practice was changed to McCune and Ainslie.

Also, in 1996, Mr. Mark Murphy, PT, MPT, OCS, COMT, FAAOMPT started working at McCune and Ainslie.

In 2002, the Auburn location was sold.

In 2007, Mr. Murphy began his partnership with Dave, opening Dryden Sport and Spine, which is now the Dryden location.

Dr. Lauren Potter, PT, DPT, OCS, joined the group in 2011.

The practice changed its name to McCune & Murphy Physical Therapy, PC in 2012, which was also the same year the Trumansburg location was founded. In 2014, the Trumansburg office moved into its current location on Main Street, and one year later, McCune and Murphy acquired Independent Fitness, a Trumansburg fitness center which is currently known as T-Fit.

In 2018, they launched Peak Performance Fitness Consultants to address the growing need to transition physical therapy patients to long term healthy habits.

In the beginning of 2021, Dr. Potter advanced to partner therefore changing the name to McCune, Murphy & Potter Physical Therapy, PC.

Dr. Potter and Mr. Murphy continue to own and run McCune, Murphy & Potter Physical Therapy with a number of physical therapists, physical therapy aides and office staff, while Dave enjoys his retirement. The practice continues to grow and thrive.
